主人公赵如圭是一位精明而又不失信义、圆猾又颇具爱国情感的天津商人，由于他善于经营，将父亲传下来的玉器古董店“恒雅斋”搞得红红火火，特别是当他以深厚的玉器古董学问赢得蜗居天津的宣统皇帝溥仪的信任，频频收购了从皇宫带出来的国宝级的玉器古董之后，他成为令人羡慕又嫉妒的人物。赵如圭有三个如花似玉的女儿，大女儿叠玉嫁给了青帮头子陆雄飞；二女儿怀玉是思想进步的爱国青年，对玉器绘画颇有心得是赵如圭的至爱和接班人；三女儿洗玉少不更事，图慕虚荣……
