《血色将至》改编至美国作家Upton Sinclair于1927年发表的小说《石油》。影片取景于南德克萨斯州的荒芜戈壁，描述了虚构的石油大亨Daniel Plainview在十九世纪末二十世纪初的南部石油潮中一步步发迹的人生轨迹，同时也概括展现出贫穷落后的南加州小镇风貌，并采取了平行对照的叙事手法详细描绘了宗教势力在美国南部扩张的过程。
