清末民初，小镇上天真烂漫的少女曹七巧和京城大户姜家的三少爷季泽一见钟情，可七巧的哥哥曹大年贪图钱财要把妹妹嫁给患有软骨病的老二仲泽，七巧为了接近季泽，答应这门婚事。失望至极的季泽在仲泽的婚宴上喝得酩酊大醉，令七巧心痛欲裂。此后，季泽越来越沉沦，常常夜宿妓院，七巧冒险到妓院劝阻，与酒醉的季泽同居了一晚，并因此怀孕，生下一子，由此招致众人的诸多非议。仲泽为保护妻子，临终时，坚定地声称自己是这孩子的亲生父亲，姜老太太亦为维护自家的名声，痛斥众人对七巧的攻击。老大伯泽夫妇为了倾吞家产，利用七巧对季泽的感情，设下一个个圈套，造成七巧和季泽误会重重，使得她们本来纯洁的情感在金钱和岁月的摧残下渐渐消逝。于是七巧的人格开始扭曲，性情变得冷酷，她甚至亲手毁掉了儿女的婚姻和幸福，变成一个刻薄自私、终日靠鸦片麻痹灵魂的女人。

抗日战争末期，厦门的一天黄昏，医学院学生何美纪正准备回校，在桥上遇到日军轰炸，急忙躲闪间，来自马来西亚的华侨实习生林志祥奋不顾身地上前紧紧抱住美纪，自己却被炮弹熏得满脸黑烟，志祥和美纪在等待轰炸过去的时光中互生情愫。他们相约，如果能躲过这场轰炸，明晚会在初次相逢的桥上约会。志祥所就读的学校突然宣布撤离，志祥因此没能赴晚上与美纪的约会。志祥撤离来到桥边时，取下自己胸前的名牌，放在桥边。晚上美纪到来看到志祥的名牌上沾满了血迹，心情非常难过，她担心着志祥的生死。战争结束后，在拥挤的火车战，美纪重遇志祥，看到志祥还活着，美纪心里又喜又忧，因为虽然她心里一直放不下志祥，但一切都已物换星移，人事全非，战争带给这对恋人却是永远的遗憾。
